These macros are exposed on the command line and are used to specify which package you wish to install. To get some idea on what they are used for, please read my explanation in the linked article.

For an end-user standpoint it doesn't matter that much. But I will still add a few words about how installing the different packages helps your end-user with a run-time error.
It's safe to say that these packages include the entire C++ toolchain available from Visual C++. In other words, they include the aforementioned standard libraries such as Boost, OpenMP, STL and such and also its important components such as C++ AMP, CRT, MFC, C++ Remote Debugging, CLR, C++ Runtime Debugging, Visual C++ Debugger, VC++ GUI Runtime, Visual C++ Memory Manager, Visual C++ Runtime Library, Visual C++ Standard Library, and Visual C++ Runtime Library on both CPU architectures.
These packages also include the necessary files required to be able to debug and run your apps in Visual Studio.

To ensure compatibility and the ability to run your C++ apps, make sure to install all of these packages and additionally check the "Feature Selection Wizard" to ensure that your installation is as recent as possible.
